I tried again and the top gave way a tiny bit so I tugged a little harder. Suddenly, it clicked. A doorway now stood in front of me and a silent clunking noise carried itself up the stairs from down below. I gasped and became aware of the slight chill that the open door had given to the room. Chapter 1
It was well past dark and I was the last person in the library. It was eerily quiet, except for a faint tapping sound coming from the next aisle. I moved cautiously toward the end of the row and peeked my head around the corner only to see… nothing, absolutely nothing. I shrugged my shoulders just thinking it was the nerves that had made myself imagine the tapping sound and walked back to the bookshelf where I had left my jacket and a stack of books. I silently wished that I had brought one of my friends with me this late at night but, there was no other choice. It was my brother who had disappeared last week, not theirs. I had to find answers and if that meant going into the Restricted Section, so be it. I lifted up my lantern to look closer at the spines of the books and notices the thick layer of dust that had grown on one particularly thick book. I set my lantern down as silently as I could but it still made a noticeable clanking sound. I tied my jacket around my waist and placed my other books on the desk behind me. I then as quietly as I could, placed my hand on the book’s spine and tried to pull it from the shelf, it wouldn’t budge. I tried again and the top gave way a tiny bit so I tugged a little harder. Suddenly, it clicked. A doorway now stood in front of me and a silent clunking noise carried itself up the stairs from down below. I gasped and became aware of the slight chill that the open door had given to the room. I untied my jacket and put it on, peaked down the stairwell and decided to head down. I placed my foot on the first step waiting for something to happen like a silent alarm or for Filch’s cat, Mrs Norris to show up and get me into trouble. Nothing happened. I then descended down 6 more steps and noticed the stairway curving into itself. I looked back up at the faint moonlight, wondering when I would see it again. Turned back down the stairway, lifted my lantern and descended down the rest of the stairs. The stairway continued for a long while and I occasionally stumbled across a couple of rats or some puffs of dust or cobwebs. The occasional pebble would find its way into my shoe and cause me discomfort until I would sit down and take it out. The walls had a slant to them so the roof was an arch with multiple stalagmites growing from the ceiling. The ground appeared to be a never-ending staircase, on it was many pebbles scattered around with some rats cowering in the walls afraid of my presence. The stalagmites seemed to help light my way when my candle flickered from the cool breeze coming from down below. It was really beautiful, I just wished I grabbed my wand from my nightstand to help ease my anxiety as it piled up when I roamed closer to the bottom. I could hear it now… a faint clanking sound. It was getting louder now, I cursed under my breath and thought about turning back. I had no source of protection and my wand way back in my dormitory, but my curiosity took over. I began to see a glow in the pathway. I just now noticed how the stairway had turned into a long corridor. I could hear talking and the clunking sound coming from up ahead. I was almost mesmerized as I began to make sense of what was being said. Their voices were beautiful as they continuously sang Blue Moon, by the Banshees and Celestina Warbeck. It was enchanting, and I found myself drifting closer and closer to the doorway. I started to hear violins, basses, violas, cellos, a whole orchestra and more. They seemed to all be in perfect harmony. I then reached the doorway, now blinded by the eerie brightness. When I walked through the doorway, the music stopped. The light faded into an eerie glow and then, I was ambushed.……..
