Ghosts in the Wizarding World

You may think you know enough about ghosts, but there is much about them that we do not know! In this article, we are going to dive deeper into the interesting phenomenon of GHOSTS!!

What Ghosts Are:
In the world of Harry Potter, a ghost is the transparent, 3D imprint of a witch or wizard that is dead, which continues to exist in the mortal world. Muggles can’t come back as ghosts (we’d all love to), and even the wisest witches and wizards choose not to. It is people with ‘unfinished business’, whether in the form of fear, guilt, regrets, or plain attachment to the mortal world who refuse to move on to the next dimension.

Ghosts’ Poor Version of Life:
Ghosts are limited in what they can experience because they have chosen a feeble representation of mortal life (it will never be the same as actually being mortal.) No physical pleasure continues to exist to them. Their knowledge and point of view remains at the level it had gotten during life, so that old discontent and displeasure (for example, at having an incompletely severed neck) continue to cause annoyance after several centuries. For this reason, ghosts tend to be poor company, generally. They are especially disappointing on the one subject that fascinates most people: ghosts cannot return a very smart answer on what it is like to die (which I’m sure we all want to know, right!?) because they have chosen an poor version of life instead.

Ghosts and Objects:
We all wonder how ghosts interact with objects in the mortal world. Ghosts can pass through solid objects without damaging themselves or the material, but they can create disturbances in elements like water, fire, and air. The temperature drops immediately when there is a ghost in the room, an effect intensified if many gather in the same place.

Ghosts’ appearance can also turn flames blue. If part or all of a ghost pass through a living creature (like a human), the person/creature will experience a freezing sensation as though they have been plunged into ice-cold water (that doesn’t sound very pleasant…)

Witches, Wizards, Muggles, and Ghosts:
Witches and wizards are much more susceptible to what Muggles call paranormal activity. They will see and hear ghosts plainly where a Muggle might only feel that a haunted place is cold or ‘creepy’. Muggles who insist that they see ghosts in perfect focus are either lying or are wizards that are showing off – and in a violation of the International Statute of Secrecy.

The Four Houses of Hogwarts

Have you ever wondered who created the houses and about them? Here is the answer to these questions!

Gryffindor house was created by Godric Gryffindor. The Ravenclaw house was created by Rowena Ravenclaw. The Hufflepuff house was created by Helga Hufflepuff. The Slytherin house was created by Salazar Slytherin.

But why did they create these houses?

A long time ago, Godric, Rowena, Helga and Salazar got along wonderfully. They had decided to teach magic to the young wizards and witches.

They then created Hogwarts. But one day, Salazar told the other three that only Purebloods could study at Hogwarts. The others didn't agree with him. They then decided to create four houses, and Salazar then left Hogwarts forever.

Naming Seers

A very majority of the variety of first names are given to children by their wizard parents, some of them being what we might think of as Muggle names (such as James, Harry, Ronald), others giving a unique flavour of the personality or destiny of the person (like Xenophilius, Remus, Alecto).

Some wizards/witches have a family tradition of names. One of these is the Black family, for example. They like to name their kids after stars and constellations (which many would say suits their lofty ambition and pride). Other wizarding families (such as the Potters and the Weasleys) simply pick their favorite names for their children.

However, a certain part of the wizarding society follows the ancient wizarding practice of consulting a Naming Seer, who (usually for a big payment of gold) will predict the child’s future and suggest an appropriate name for the child.

This practice of using Naming Seers is becoming increasingly rare. Many parents prefer to ‘let him/her find his/her own way’, and dislike (with good reason) getting premature hints of aptitude, limitations or, at worst, catastrophe. Mothers and fathers have often worried themselves silly after seeing the Naming Seer, wishing that they had not heard the Seer’s predictions about their child’s personality or future.

Would you want to use a Naming Seer, or get named by one?

Fun Fact

Ever wonder how they made the werewolves in Harry Potter look so real? Well, talented makeup artists actually glued goat hair to the face, arms, and legs of the actor who played Greyback to give him a werewolf look. That must have been uncomfortable, but maybe it felt nice!? Either way, it definitely paid off, since the werewolves look so real and amazing!
