Chapter 3
Eijirou pushes a bowl under a leak, sitting down and staring up. A villager starts to complain. “Every storm, this roof leaks no matter how many fronds I add.”
“Fixed!” Izuku exclaims. He swings down from the post, landing in front of the villager. “Wind shifted the post.” He takes a piece of pork from the villagers bowl and he stared up at the ceiling. “Mmm, that’s good pork.”
A squeak behind him makes him turn around, where Eijirou stares up at him, ears flopping down. Izuku starts to panic. “Oh, I mean… No, I wasn’t… What? I hear them calling me, so I gotta… bye!” He waves and runs out, heading to a villager who’s getting his first tattoo

“You’re doing great,” he told him, taking his hand.
“Is he done yet?” The villager asks between yelps. Izuku looks at the half done fish.
“So close…” The tattooer hits a little too hard, causing him to flinch.

Izuku is now teaching a couple village kids some dances, smiling as they follow along. A fourth kid comes up, doing some kind of break dancing thing. He rolls his shoulders and winks at Izuku, whose gay heart can’t take it, he gives him a really confused face.

“I’m serious about that chicken, eating the rock.” A village elder says waving his wooden tongs at Denki, who was standing next to Izuku, hitting his beak against a rock. “He seems to lack the basic intelligence required for basically...everything. Can we maybe just…” He lifts one of the lead bundles, a jet of steam blocking his face so he has to tilt around it. “Cook him?”
Izuku looks at Denki again. “Sometimes our worth lies beneath the surface. Far beneath…” he amends as Denki swallows the rock. “In some cases. But I’m sure there’s more to Denki than meets the eye.” He jerks as Denki starts choking. He coughs up the rock, stares at it, and continues trying to eat it.

Izuku is standing on a field with his parents behind him when a village woman comes up to him, a coconut in her hands. “It’s the harvest. I was husking the coconuts and…” she cracks it, revealing that the pristine white was ashy and black in some places. Two other villagers walked up, two whole baskets full of the infected coconuts.
“Well… we’ll clear the diseased trees. And we will start a new grove over...there!” Izuku points at an empty field, where a couple villagers are walking around.
“Thanks, Deku. He’s doing great!” She adds in a whisper to his parents. Izuku turns to his father, who gives him a smile. “It suits you.”
“Chief!” A fisherman comes running up the beach, pointing behind him. “There’s something you’ve gotta see.”

“Our traps in the east lagoon, they’re pulling up less and less fish.” He says, opening the wooden trap, showing its empty contents to Izuku. Izuku looks in, and thinks for a bit, starting to mutter under his breath.
“We’ll rotate the fishing rounds.” He says after a bit. The fisherman shook his head. “We’ve tried. There’s no fish.”
“Oh...then we’ll fish the far side of the island.” Izuku points to the other side, walking a bit that way.
“We’ve tried.”
“The windward side?”
“And the leeward side. The shallows, the channels. We’ve tried the whole lagoon. They’re just...gone.”
Toshi turns to the fisherman, and starts talking to him. Izuku stares out across the water, muttering again as he thinks of possible ideas.
“What if we fish...beyond the reef?” Izuku asks tentatively, picking up an oar.
Toshi glared at him. “Izu…”
“I know, but if there are no fish in the lagoon...”
“Izuku, we have one rule.”
“An old rule, when there were fish.”
“A rule that keeps us safe.”
“But Dad!”
“Instead of endangering our people so you can run right back to the water!”
Toshi is yelling at this point. He notices the group of three fishermen watching them, and they look away sheepishly. He leans in close and whispers, “Every time I think you’re past this.”
He snatches the oar out of Izuku’s hands and walks away. Before he leaves, he throws it into the beach, proclaiming “No one goes beyond the reef.”

Inko finds Izuku sitting on a bent palm tree, breaking sticks and chucking them in the sand. Inko walked up and sat next to him. “Well, it’s not like you said it in front of your dad...standing on a boat.”
“I didn’t say ‘go beyond the reef’ because I want to be on the ocean.”
“But you still do.” Inko placed a hand over Izuku’s, who threw his last stick down, glaring out at the horizon. “He’s hard on you because-“
“Because he doesn’t get me.”
“Because he was you. Drawn to the ocean. Down by the shore. He took a canoe, Izuku. He crossed the reef and found an unforgiving sea. Waves like mountains. His best friend begged to be on that boat. Your dad couldn't save him. He’s hoping...he can save you.
“Sometimes, who we wish we were, what we wish we can do is just...not meant to be.” Inko kissed Izuku’s cheek, and got off the tree. She turned and headed back to the village. Izuku kept sitting there, staring at his hands.
