Chapter 1
“In the beginning, there was only ocean. Then, the father island, Shoto, emerged. His heart held the greatest power ever known. It could create life itself. And Shoto shared it with the world.
“But in time, some began to seek Shoto’s heart. They believed that if they could possess it, the great power of creation would be theirs. And one day, the most daring of them all voyaged across the vast ocean to take it.
“He was a demigod of the Wind and Sea. He was a warrior, a trickster. A shapeshifter who could change form with the power of his magical fish hook. And his name was Katsuki.
“But without the heart, Shoto began to crumble, giving birth to a terrible darkness. Katsuki tried to escape, but was confronted by another who sought the heart: Todoroki, a demon of Earth and Fire. Katsuki was struck from the sky, never to be seen again.”
An elderly man was holding two paintings, one of a man shrouded in flames, and the other a girl surrounded by jewels, and a third, a boy with a hook, connecting the two. He ripped them farther, tearing the one in the middle.
“And his magical fish hook, and the heart of Shoto, were lost to the sea. Where even now, 1,000 years later, Todoroki and the demons of the deep still hunt for the heart, hiding in the darkness that will continue to spread, chasing away our fish, draining the life from island after island, until every last one of us is devoured by the jaws of inescapable death!”
He put down the two paintings and picked up a third as he spoke, this one of the ocean and islands the villagers knew and thought existed. He raised a bowl of black ink, spilling it from the island in the middle, watching it spread throughout the painting. When he finished, he ripped it away from his face, nearly yelling at the young children in front of him.
“But,” he put down the painting and stood up. “One day, the heart will be found by someone who will journey beyond the reef, find Katsuki, deliver him across the great ocean to restore Shoto’s heart and save us all.”
The young boy in the front stared up at the man, his bright green eyes shining. His green hair fell in curls around his ears, his freckled face in a smile. He was the only one. The other children were all in states of shock and horror.
“Okay, thank you, Father, that’s enough.” The flap of the tented building opened, and a man stepped through. He was a little on the skinny side, blonde hair stuck back. He had two sections hanging over his forehead, bangs separated neatly. His bright blue eyes lit up when he spotted the boy in front.
The little green haired boy, Izuku Midoriya, waddled forward. “Papa!” He called, reaching out for his father. The man picked up the small boy, and turned to his father, who was pounding his cane on the ground.
“Toshi, you need to stop coddling them.” He said. Toshinori Midoriya, the village chief sighed. “I am not coddling anyone. I am speaking the truth. No one goes beyond the reef. We’re safe here. There is no darkness. There are no monsters.”
As he spoke, he threw his hand out, hitting the pole next to him. A painting of a monster fell down, followed by another, then another, until every flap was down, revealing a portrait of a monster. The children stared around before screaming, tackling Toshi.
“There is nothing beyond that reef but storm and rough sea. As long as we stay on our very safe island, we’ll be fine.”
Izuku, who had been pinned under his father, pops out. He notices one of the flaps swaying in the wind and waddles over. He could hear his father arguing with his grandfather in the background, “The legends are true, someone will have to go.”
“Father, Motunui is paradise. Who would want to go anywhere else?”
He picked it up and stared out at the ocean. He giggled and ran down to the beach.
He waddled up to the edge of the water, his pale skin nearly blending into the sand. He noticed a seashell, and went up to it. He turned, hearing something.
A small baby turtle was under some trees, hiding from some birds who were preying on it. Izuku looked at the shell, whined a bit, but went to help the turtle.
He pulled a leaf off a tree, using it to shield the baby turtle from the predator birds. One came close, but he shooed it away. A second one attempted to pick up the turtle, but Izuku scared it off. He flipped the turtle right side up and watched as it made its way into the ocean and swam away.
Izuku swayed a bit, smiling. He turned to leave, but a section of the ocean pulled back, revealing the shell he had been looking at earlier. He picked it up and waved at the water, but it pulled back again, revealing a second shell.
Izuku waddled over to it, picking it up, and the ocean pulled back once more. Izuku followed it as it kept spreading back.
He saw a sea turtle with the baby he had saved swim by, and he waved. The water rose up above him, and he stared up at it. The water covered his hair, flowing it so it curled up, in a flopped over spike.
Izuku giggled, and he noticed something in the water. A small blueish-white stone with red hints floated towards Izuku. He reached his hand in, and took the stone. He ran his fingers across the spiral design etched onto it.
“Izuku!” Toshi called. The water perked up, messed with Izuku’s hair again, and pushed him towards the beach on a wave. Once he landed on the sand, he wobbled, dropping the stone.
“Oh, there you are.” Toshi said, running over to his son. Izuku was looking around for the stone he had dropped, and Toshi picked him up. “Izuku, what are you doing? You scared me.” He walked away, with Izuku watching the sea.
“Fun, I wants to go back,” Izuku said, reaching for the sea again.
Toshi patted his back, setting him down to walk. “I know, I know, but you don’t go out there. It’s dangerous. Izuku, come on, let’s go back to the village.” He took Izuku’s hand and led him over to a woman with Izuku’s green hair and eyes. Her hair was mostly down, but some of it was pulled into a bun. “You are the next great chief of our people.”
“And you’ll do wondrous things, my little minnow.” Inko Midoriya, Toshi’s wife and Izuku’s mother, said as she picked him up, nosing him.
“Oh yes, but first, you must learn where you’re meant to be.” Toshi said as he walked with his wife back to the village.
