Chapter 1

Lydia Goldstein walked on the streets at night. She shivered in the cold and she could see her breath in the night air. That was how cold it was. She was out here, for she had just escaped from her Uncle's home, whom she hated. He was horrible to her. She put her hands in her pockets, she was so cold.
"Ahem!" a voice suddenly said from behind her.
Lydia twirled around, to see a girl standing there. She had soft brown eyes and dark brown hair. She smiled at Lydia. "Well, hello Lydia," she said.
"How do you know my name?" Lydia said sharply. "And who are you? Tell me - now!"
"Whoa! Calm down, girl!" the girl said. "That doesn't matter right now. I need you to get away from this place. She glanced around the dark street.
"And why is that?" Lydia asked.
"Lydia! Just come this way!" the girl said, grabbing Lydia's arm and walking down the street.
"Let go of me!" Lydia cried, and pulled away from the girl. She started to run down the street, but then stopped. She could hear voices, men's voices.
"Where do you think she is?" said one of the men.
"Boss said she was around here somewhere."
"Right." A torchlight shone around the street. Lydia ducked behind a bush in time, just as the light shone where she had been standing.
Maybe I should have stayed with that girl, thought Lydia. Maybe she was trying to help me.
"What was that sound?" said one of the men. "It sounded like the rustle of bushes. Hey, maybe someone is hiding in the bushes!"
Lydia held her breath.
"Nah, dumb-head! It was only a bird! See, there's one right there, Everly!"
"Oh, right," said Everly.
Lydia sighed in relief, but that was a bad thing to do. Everly heard her again.
"This time it wasn't a bird! Someone is there!" and he pointed the torchlight at the bush, but the other man pulled him off down the street, muttering, "Dumb-head!"'
Lydia stood up, to see the girl standing there. "That is what happens when you run off," she said, grinning.
"Well, it's nothing to laugh about!" Lydia said sharply.
"Okay, okay."
"And tell me your name. Please!"
"Oh fine. My name is Winifred."
"Okay, cool. I'm satisfied now," said Lydia.
"We should stay the night at the inn. It is just down here," said Winifred. "And some friends of mine might be waiting there."
"Okay, that's good," said Lydia. " 'Cause I'm so hungry and sleepy right now. But one question. Why did you come to me? Are you supposed to be - be-"
"Lydia, calm down," said Winifred gently, smiling. "Okay... I don't think you'll like this, but I'm here to protect you."
Silence fell, then Lydia blurted out, "Why? Why on earth are you protecting me for? I'm a normal girl, ain't I?"
"Hold you palms up, please," said Winifred suddenly. "Up at the street light."
"Why?"
"Just do it!"
"Fine." Lydia held her palms up to the light.
"Now close your eyes and think. Think that you are actually going to turn to street light off."
"What? Are you serious? Do you think I'm this kind of -"
"Just do it, please."
"Whatever." Lydia closed her eyes and thought, Turn off. Turn off. Then she opened her eyes again and looked up at the lamppost. It flickered, then went out.
"No - that's just a coincidence," said Lydia. "I didn't turn it off!"
But Winifred just smiled.
They reached the inn soon enough.
inninnniinn
"Come on, let's go in," said Winifred. They walked to the door, which was hanging open, and looked inside.
Two men were at one table, drinking mugs fill of beer and one other older man was at another table, smiling in a dreamy way and a girl sitting at another table with a boy and another girl were talking in whispers to each other.
"Hey, Lilly! We're over here!" shouted Winifred to them.
"Winifred! What are you doing?" Lydia asked, but Winifred ignored her.
A girl with short brown hair and green eyes walked over to them. "Winifred!" she said quietly. "Where have you been? We've been waiting for ages!"
"Sorry, it's just that I had, uh, trouble with Lydia," Winifred said, eyeing Lydia.
"Oh, right," said Lilly. Then she said in a louder tone to Lydia, "Hello. My name is Lilly and over there"- she pointed to the boy and girl -"They are my friends - and Winifred's. That girl is called Liliana. She's kind of annoying, and a bit of a..... crybaby." She laughed. "Anyway, that boy there is my brother - his name is Philip."
"Right," said Lydia slowly. "But can I get something to eat?"
Lilly laughed. "Sure," she said.

Soon Lydia was sitting on one of the beds in in bedrooms. She sighed, and lay down. It seemed like no more than two seconds, and she was asleep.
