Well, it all begins with a text saying, "Wanna play a game?" YOU DO NOT WANT TO PLAY THE GAME. It begins with simple stuff that isn't ideal for you, like staying up until 4 a.m or watching a horror movie. Okay, that's not terrible, right? I mean, it could be worse! You're right, it could be worse. It gets worse. They start telling you to cut. Traditional cutting, cutting whales into your arm, etc. It's terrible, it couldn't possible get worse, right? Wrong. It ends in telling you to commit suicide, or they'll kill your parents.

Who created it, and why would they name it the Blue Whale Game?

This game was named by its creator, a Russian psychologist, who thought that a person with “no value” should commit suicide as does the whale, which “strands” itself. When an individual or a group of marine mammals are washed ashore or in shallow water and cannot return itself, it is known as “stranding,” which is believed to cause by disorientation due to naval use of sonars or naturally by earth's magnetic field. How can I avoid it?

If you get the text, DO NOT REPLY. NO MATTER WHAT. Block the person and tell a parent/guardian. They will give you further instructions on what to do.

Do they just text you?

They'll message you on any social media platform that involves communicating with other real people. Always block them and never reply. NEVER REPLY.
