Remus' name:


If you think about it, when Remus Lupin was named, it was almost as if they knew he would be a werewolf.

The name Remus probably came from a legend about the founding of Rome. Remus and Romulus were twins that were thrown into the River Tiber (An important, sacred river in Rome) when they were young. They were found and raised by a wolf, who was rumored to be the wolf goddess, Lupa, herself. See the connection to wolves, here?

Now let’s explain his last name, Lupin. That name is most likely derived from ‘Lupa’, the Roman wolf goddess who, according to myths, trained young heroes and expected them to be tough enough to almost run with her pack. If they were weak, well, let’s just say they couldn’t be trained anymore.

Anyways, don’t you think it’s sort of uncanny how both of his names were wolf-like? Maybe his mum could see the future…

With all that is happening around the world right now, we have forgotten about another major issue that is on the brink of taking over our world as we know it. Ever since the 1830s, we humans have been influencing the climate of our planet. In those times, it was little things that didn’t change a lot; but as stated in the butterfly effect, even the smallest actions in the beginning can set off a giant chain of events that can’t be stopped.

Over the past century, the Earth’s average temperature has risen by 2 degrees Fahrenheit (a little more than 1 degree Celsius). And while this may seem like not a lot, in fact, it really is. The reason for these changes, at least in our current present, is because of carbon dioxide emissions and fossil fuels. When these gases get released into the atmosphere, they form a sort of one-way shield around the Earth, through which sunlight and heat can get in but not get out; and it ends up changing the temperature of our planet drastically.

While the Earth’s temperature changes over the last century may seem somewhat slight, they will get bigger and bigger as time goes on, and eventually, although hopefully not soon in the future, our Earth will resemble the planet Venus. Venus, the planet next closest to the sun after Mercury, has unbelievably high surface temperatures, as well as a poisonous atmosphere. But, one funny thing is that it’s mass, density, and chemical composition are all oddly similar to Earth’s. Is it possible that humanity had once lived there and ruined the planet, and escaped to Earth to try again? If yes, then we’re failing.

One of the more troubling aspects about climate change, however, is the rate at which sea glaciers in the Arctic and Antarctic are melting. First of all, marine wildlife such as seals need that sea ice to raise their babies on, and without it, they will be unable to do that. And second, all of the glacier melt is raising the sea level. It is predicted that Venice will be underwater as soon as 2100 if climate change is not curbed.

You might be reading this and thinking “What can I do to help?” Actually, there are many things you can do. Going back to the butterfly effect, even the smallest actions have impact. Ride your bike to school instead of taking a car. Turn off the lights whenever you can. Remember, you’re never truly powerless in this world. There is always something you can do to help, and it is your duty as a human being that lives on this planet to do it.
