Chapter 23

      Laguz                                                   “water” / “unity”

                                                                 Element: Water                                  Herb:
Leek

                                                                 Astrological: The Moon                  Tree:
Willow

                                                                 Color: Dark Green                             Crystal: Pearl

Laguz- “Log-uhz”

Literally: “Water” or “Ocean”

Key concepts: Rune of the unconscious context of becoming or the evolutionary process.
Rune of Life’s longing for itself.

Psi:emotion, psychic
powers, unconscious mental processes, love, dreaming

Energy:life energy, ocean
spirit, origins of life, collective unconscious, the astral plane, love as
unity, evolution

Governs:
-Mastery of emotion in order to shape magic
-Guidance through difficult initiatory tests, ie. initiation into life
-Increase in vitality and life force
-Communication between your conscious mind to another’s unconscious mind
-Development of ‘second sight’ or prophetic wisdom
-All powers of dreaming (lucid dreams, astral projection)

Element: Water rules the
north; lucid, flowing dreams

Astrological:The moon is closely
tied to mood, emotions and instincts; control over the ocean

Herb:Leeks, more
specifically house leeks, are not only the symbol of Wales and a relative to
the onion plant; they are symbols of protection in battle. They were used to
signify friend from foe in the heart of battle. Love, luck, and protection are
the main attributes to leeks.

Tree: Symbolic with the
5th moon of the Celtic druid year, April 15th through May
12th, the willow tree shares close ties with the moon and water. It
is known for enchantments, wishes, romantic love, healing, protection,
fertility, femininity, divination, friendship, joy, peace, imagination,
intuition and visions. Using the dew of a willow tree, or water from a stream
near a willow tree, in a scrying bowl will enhance its divining power. It is
said that broomsticks made of willow are more fluid and springy.

Crystal: Pearls enclose the
user with an aura of calm and beauty. They stand for calm, purity, truth,
loyalty and integrity.

       Water
is the symbol of unconscious and invisible Life forces. All of life is
dependent on water, and therefore Laguz represents the universal ocean, the
supreme unity of all life: past, present and future. To the runic initiate, the
unconscious forces are controlled for good use through mastery of runic skills.
The substance of Laguz is everywhere present, saturates all things and
underlies all manifestation. It is the living energy out of which everything is
made. It sustains and enriches any idea that is projected into it. The ability
to see clairvoyantly and into the future are psychic talents associated with
Laguz, as is protection from physical and psychic poisons. The rune can be
used in establishing a communications link from your conscious mind, under
willful intent, to the unconscious mind of another. Caution and much wisdom
must be exercised in such subtle manipulations.
