Acromantulas were discovered in 1794. They are believed to have been created by magicians (centuries before the Experimental Breeding Ban was passed) in order to guard treasures, as it is rare for a magical creature to have the ability to speak human language by nature.
In 1943 a colony of acromantulas, led by Aragog, was established in the Forbidden Forest at Hogwarts. Following the death of their leader and Voldemort's rise to power, this colony became loyal to the Dark Lord's army.
