The Making

Chapter 5
As soon as I set foot in the secret tunnel, bright lights turned on, machines started whirring, and a robotic voice said, “WELCOME BACK, MAYA. HOW MAY I HELP YOU?”

“Oh, not much… I just have to make a super strong umbrella. Get the DML out please.” I told the voice.

“RIGHT ON IT.”

I reached a room, my invention lab, and started toward a large touchscreen in front of seven glass tubes.
The screen had a bunch of different parts and materials on it, the DML (digital material log), and I started to select materials I would need to make the umbrella.

“Ok, I need nylon, SL, and some lightweight titanium… “ I planned.

SL was short for strengthening liquid, something that would amplify the effect of the strength in a material. I came up with the SL concoction through trial and error, and a LOT of explosions and bad hair days…

These materials came shooting down the tubes that were in front of the large screen with the DML on it. The materials shot through the chutes and then appeared right next to me on a table.

“Alright, let’s do this.”

I started cutting, gluing, sewing, wiedling, and designing for the umbrella. On the nylon fabric, I put just a few drops of the SL on it, and I could just feel it get stronger, but still look the same and be the same weight. Finally, I glanced at the clock and it was exactly 7:27.

“Just on time!” I said, tired but happy. My finished umbrella was in purple ombre with white butterflies swirling around it like they were actually flying. It had a plain but striking dark purple into black ombre handle.

I climbed back through the passage to my bedroom, umbrella in hand, and emerged on the other side. Then I rushed down the stairs, opened the door, and walked out onto the porch. With the cover of the porch, I opened the umbrella, and stepped into the jelly rain.

I squeezed my eyes shut, ready for a shower of tennis sized blobs of jelly to come crashing down on me.
