Chapter 8
I looked ahead and let out a soft moan that even I didn't hear over the roar of the ocean. Azkaban appeared miles away. I looked down into the whirling water, watching the water jump up at us and fall back into the sea. It took me a while to realize that I was falling asleep, I plunged both hands into the inky black water and splashed some on my face. I was wide awake within seconds.
Suddenly the boat bumped into something and I was thrown forward slightly. Looking up I saw a large creature, it looked like a snake and it was rising out of the water. I heard someone, it sounded like Hermione, give a shriek.
The tail appeared out of the water and tipped the other boat, the one that Harry, Ron, and Ginny were on. The fell into the water as the snake's tail vanished. I watched the surrounding water for any sign of the creature. It all happened at once, Neville gave a yell of panic, Hermione screamed, and the second boat was tipped over.
The water was cold, when I opened my eyes I couldn't see anything. I swam to the surface, but it was dark up here to. I couldn't see anything, but I could hear Hermione's screams and Harry's strangled calls. It all sounded very distant though, I could hear my heavy breathing, much louder than normal. Then I heard a hollow thump, it sounded as though it came from above me.
Then realization struck me, I was under the boat and everyone else was out there, facing the creature. I took a deep breathe and went back under water. I swam away from where I previously was and emerged. I was no longer under the boat and I could see several figures bobbing in the water.
The creature had vanished again, I looked around frantically, looking for the tail or the head, anything. And then I heard Draco yell, he was being lifted into the air. The creature had wrapped it's tail around his chest. I fumbled with my robes, searching for my wand.
"Reducto!" Hermione screamed, pointing her wand at the giant serpent. It gave a loud shriek of pain and dropped Draco. The snake sank beneath the waves and we all stared at the spot it had vanished.
"D'you think it's gone?" Neville asked. No one answered, we all just kept staring. After 10 minutes of silence, Hermione raised her wand again. "Accio boats!" She cried.
The boats zoomed across the water towards her, I ducked as one of them flew over my head.

We all clambered into the boats, soaking wet. "What was that?" Ron asked as the boats moved forwards again. "A horned serpent. The ministry must've put it here to guard Azkaban." Hermione said quickly. "Well it wasn't a very good guard. Seeing as we're still alive and- it looks like Azkaban is getting nearer now." Draco said, looking ahead. I looked ahead to and saw that he was right. I sighed with relief and relaxed, we'd be there soon.
