The Private Sessions

Chapter 8
We sit and wait for what seems like hours before an announcement comes over the intercom. "Sorry for the wait. The Gamemakers had to get set up and ready. For these private sessions you will be marked from 1-12, 12 being the highest. You will go in order of districts starting with 1. Female before male. Good luck and may the odds be ever in your favour," the intercom says. I'm pretty sure the voice belongs to Claudius Templesmith, one of the hosts of the Hunger Games. A helper opens a door and calls the girl from 1. She walks into the room with a smile on her face. The rest of the tributes sit silently. I think of the scores we could get. Anywhere between 1 & 12. I hope for a t least a 5. I look around the room at the other tributes. The smaller, weaker tributes, such as Rue, Ellie & Sebastian, will probably get a 4 or 5. The bigger, more skilled tributes, such as the Careers & Thresh, will probably get 10, 11 or 12. They call up Ellie. She looks around nervously and I give her a discreet thumbs up. Ellie smiles at me sweetly. I shouldn't be getting so attached to her considering she'll probably die on the first day. The boy from 4 gets called up. I realise I don't know what I'm going to do to impress them. I think of what I have been practising. Identifying poisonous foods, knife throwing, running- what am I going to choose? I don't think identifying food or running will do anything so knife throwing is the best option. I don't want to get to good of a score, so I won't be targeted, and I know that Clove will be amazing. I know I won't be as good as her so the Gamemakers won't be as impressed. I grin to myself. Then a helper calls me up. Patrick mouths good luck to me. As I walk into the room, I see the Gamemakers sitting above me on a platform. They are already pretty drunk. I introduce myself and walk over to the knives station. I pick up 5 knives. The first misses but skims the side, the second hits very far to the right, the third hits very far to the left, the fourth hits close to the middle and finally, the fifth one hits the middles. I bow and walk out a separate door. I take an elevator up to my room, there is no meal today. I open the door to the apartment and Lyma stands up. She walks over and hugs me. She smells sweet like flowers. Lyma asks me how I did. I tell her I did okay but nothing more than that. She smiles and she sends me off to my room. On my bed is a note, it says: Turn the TV on. The channel it will turn to will be previous interviews. Each interview is a different angle. Write which interview you think matches the angles on the back of this page. I turn over the page. The angles are flirtatious, arrogant, menacing, shy, illusive, sweet and stealthy. I like illusive or stealthy. I turn on the TV and watch the interviews. By the end I've put each interview into a category. I give the paper to Lyma as Patrick walks in. I ask him how he did. He says he did pretty well and I think he's hoping for a 7 or 8. I eat my meal and go to bed. Only one day until we go into the arena and I need all the sleep I can get.
