The Reaping Part 1

Chapter 2
I woke up early that morning. Nerves, I guess. Today was the reaping and I could be chosen to be in the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games was where 2 children from each of the 12 districts fought to the death until 1 remained. A few years ago my sister went in and she was killed on the first day. Since then I have been coming up with a plan in case I ever get chosen. "Finch!" my mother called from the kitchen. I put on my reaping dress did my hair up and headed downstairs. My mother gasped as I walked into the kitchen. "You look beautiful," she cried. My father was nowhere to be seen as usual. He worked at the dam making sure everything went smoothly, so the Capitol got it's power. I didn't touch my soup but my mother told me to eat up. "Finch, even if you chosen for the Hunger Games you know what the plan is, right?" my mother told me. I nodded, we had been coming up with this plan since the Hunger Games after my sister died. We waited a few hours before leaving. I was ready and we walked down to the Justice Building.

I walked over to the table where the peacekeepers sat. "Name," one grunted. "Finch Stuart," I said confidently. They buzzed my finger with some sort of device and I pressed it down on the paper. I wiped away the blood from my finger and walked over to where the rest of the 15 year old citizens were. I made eye contact with my mother who was standing at the back of the crowd. The person on the stage coughed and everyone's attention turned towards the stage. It was the escort for District 5, Lyma. "Welcome to the reaping for the 74th Hunger Games. May the odds be ever in your favour," she said. There was 2 bowls on the table filled with papers with names on them. One for boys and one for girls. Lyma said, "Ladies first!" before putting her hand into the girls bowl. "Finch Stuart." My heart sank. I took a deep breath before walking up to the stage. My eyes made contact with my mother's and all she did was nod. My head was spinning and I couldn't concentrate as Lyma pulled out the boys name. "Patrick Croddley," Lyma cried. I didn't know who Patrick was. He walked up to the stage. We shook hands and Lyma finished up the reaping before calling us to follow her through the doors of the Justice Building. The doors closed behind me and reality finally sunk in.
