The Herd
Chapter 3
When Felix got home, he didn't tell father about the foal and horse. He knew that he should, though. But he didn't want to. Father would immediately set out to go and get them. That night at supper, he was thinking about the foal, wondering what to name him. Then he had an idea. He would name the foal Star. Well, he did have a star on his forehead. Felix was settled with then name. Now he wondered what to name Star's mother. She was a beautiful horse. She really was. Felix sat thinking hard at the table, with a frown on his face, till his mother exclaimed, "Felix, are you all right, dear?"
Felix jerked up. "Oh, yes, mother," he said quickly. "Very fine."
"Well, Felix, you've been dreamy all day, I must say," said father. "What on earth have you been thinking about?"
"Oh, nothing really," said Felix briskly. "Just.." he paused.
Father raised his eyebrows.
"Just been thinking about Sta - the foal and his mother." Well, that was true, thought Felix.
"Ah, I thought so," said father, his blue eyes twinkling.
After dinner, Marybelle and Eliza, Felix's other sister washed and dried the dishes. Then it was time for bedtime.
Early next morning, Felix did his chores. Milked Snow, helped father cut wood, then brushed Chestnut. Then father said that Felix could give him some exercise.
