Felix

Chapter 2

It was the next day, and Felix was sitting in the barn. He was thinking about what his father had said that day. He had said that he had almost caught a foal and it's mother. Even though they did need horses, he hadn't really wanted his father to catch the foal and it's mother. Just then, his mother came into the barn, carrying a milk pail. She walked over to their white cow, Snow, and started milking her.
"I can take it in," offered Felix, but his mother said, "No, Felix. I would rather you help cut the potatoes."
Felix nodded. He trooped out of the barn and was still thinking about the foal and his mother. He really wanted to see them.
He took the potatoes out of a wooden bucket and brought them inside. There he washed them and started to cut them. Mother soon came inside and started helping him. As soon as he had finished, he had more chores to do. But he was allowed to have a break. He decided to go and see their only horse, Chestnut.
"Hi boy," said Felix soothingly. Chestnut nickered. He was a chestnut colour, so that was why they had called him Chestnut. He also had a black mane and tail and was a big horse.
Felix patted his soft velvety muzzle. Then he started thinking about the foal again, continuing to pat Chester.

Meanwhile, since the foal and his mother had escaped from the men they had come to a bare brown prairie. There was no lush green grass to eat there, but the mare didn't want to go back to where they had been last. The men might come again there. So the foal and his mother stood silently. But the foal tried to feed from mother but she moved away. The foal kicked it's little legs and then stood still again.
Now Felix's house wasn't far away from this foal and his mother but Felix didn't know that. Now he walked out of the barn and decided to go for a walk while he could before his chores. Just then his sister Marybelle came running out of the house shouting, "Felix, where are you going? Aren't you supposed to be doing the chores?"
"I'm going for a walk," said Felix.
"Please can I come?" asked Marybelle. "Please?"
"Well..." Felix hesitated then said, "Ask mother. But you do get tired, remember. I'm going all the way down to the prairie."
"I don't care," said Marybelle, and she ran inside to ask her mother. She came out shortly saying, "She said yes!"
"Well, come along then," said Felix.
They were down at the prairie shortly and Felix noticed a man standing in the distance with his horse. Felix and Marybelle came closer to the man and his horse and then Felix said, "Hello sir."
"Hello," replied the man. "Just looking for a foal and it's mother. Seems like they've disappeared somewhere.
Felix came excited. "Do you know my father? Mr. Wilson, sir? Because he was looking for the same. He almost rounded them up!"
"Why yes, I know your father," replied the man. "Anyway, my name's Charley? And I think you must be Felix?"
Felix nodded. "And this is Marybelle - my sister."
"I see," said Charley. "And you've never seen the foal? Ah, it would be a fine horse I must say, when it grows up."
"No sir, I haven't seen one wild horse before, but I would like to see one! Especially a herd." Felix's eyes looked dreamy.
Charley laughed. "Well, you might soon! If we do catch the horse."
Felix couldn't help saying, "Sir, I - I think that the wild horses do belong in the wild though. They were born there."
Charley laughed again but didn't say anything.
Marybelle said, "I agree with brother, sir."
Charley grinned and then mounted his black horse, a Friesian. "Well, I must say good bye to you, my lads! Goodbye!" And with a wave, he galloped off.
