Chapter 6
Against her will, Hermione was really looking forward to her meeting with Draco Malfoy in Hogsmeade. It felt almost like a date. And she told Ginny this, despite her not being the best at giving advice.
Ginny was revolted, once again, at the prospect of her best friend going to Hogsmeade with her worst enemy, though she seemed to have learned from her past mistakes and tried to look happy for Hermione, though she caught her frowning at the Slytherin table a couple times when she thought Hermione wasn't looking.
Draco looked forward to seeing Hermione. He spoke to Blaise about this, but unfortunately, Pansy was nearby and caught what they were saying.
"Draco? With that Mudblood? Draco, you must be out of your mind," Pansy said, looking very hurt.
"Yes, I'm going, but only as friends, Pansy. And she was the one who asked me, not the other way around," Draco replied.
"I'll show her a lesson about messing with my Draco," Pansy said scathingly. "Why would you agree?"
Draco recognized a danger sign.
"I was kidding," he said in a playful voice. "I was the one who asked her. But Blaise wants to go with you, don't you, Blaise?"
Draco felt confident he had scored his friend a date.
In his happy euphoria, Draco sent a bottle of poisoned mead to Slughorn, in another attempt to kill Dumbledore. He was sure he would be able to kill him now. Dumbledore was an old fraud, and after all, Draco had heard Hermione say to the half-blood Potter that Filch wouldn't think to check a bottle of Rosmerta's while spyi-no, it was seeing, her in the library.

On Saturday Draco made his way toward the south entrance, nearly skipping, but trying not to show it.
He stopped short. The hall was empty. "What's going on?" he asked a sneering Filch.
"Are you deaf or just really dim-witted?" Filch chuckled. "Didn't you hear the announcement Headmaster made at breakfast, Lumpy? Someone's been poisoned! No Hogsmeade for today!"
Draco's heart sunk. He had poisoned someone, really killed someone. But it hadn't been Dumbledore. What if it was Blaise or Pansy? They had been planning to go out today. Or Crabbe and Goyle, they ate and drank everything and anything they could get their hands on. Or maybe (Draco could hear that last word he had ever uttered to her, "Mudblood,") even Hermione Granger? Had he upset her that much?
Draco turned and ran down the hall to the hospital wing.
