Chapter 1
Hermione wasn't sure how she would be able to tell the others that she was now officially Draco Malfoy, the taunting, teasing, mocking, Slytherin's, girlfriend. She knew she would ultimately have to: they were bound to find out anyway and she thought that they would much rather hear this from her than anyone else.
She knew too, of course, that she would have to admit to Draco that it had not been her decision to ask him, it had been Lavender's. Hermione knew this would hurt him, and she wanted to tell him sooner rather than later, in case he wanted to end it quickly and spare everyone the pain. This way, she thought hopefully, she might not even have to talk to her friends.
Draco knew he would have to tell the rest of the Slytherins in the common room sooner or later (he was quite popular amongst them). And he wasn't sure why he had gone so mad as to really agree to Hermione. His father had warned him not to do such a thing, and he had never before disobeyed his father. If he had been born into a different family, he thought grimly, he definitely would have asked her. But he was a Malfoy, from an old, pure-blooded family, much of whom were Death Eaters, including old Aunt Bellatrix and his father and mother. Draco would have to end it, and soon.
The opportunity came quicker than he had contemplated. Just the next day at breakfast, even before the rest of the students from Christmas break came back, Hermione faced him with a very red face.
"DracocanItalktoyouinprivate?" Hermione gushed as they sat down and attempted to eat the delicious as ever morning breakfast prepared by the kitchen house-elves (though they seemed raw and plain this particular day to both Draco and Hermione).
"Er-sure, yes, of-of course," Draco stuttered, unable to help admiring the way her words tangled into each other when she was beyond nervous.
Hermione pulled on his wrist into the Room of Requirement after climbing several flights of stairs.
"Y-yes, what do you want?" Draco flinched, trying to keep her attention away from the large Vanishing Cabinet behind them he had been trying very hard to fix.
"WellDracototellyouthetruthIneverwantedthisitwasactuallyLavenderbutpleasedon'tholdthatagainstmeshewasthreateningme," Hermione said very quickly, and by the end of her sentence, her voice had arisen to a high-pitched squeal, and she began to sob uncontrollably.
Draco's heart dropped to his knees. This was exactly what he had needed...an excuse to leave Granger. But he wasn't happy, as he thought he should be. He didn't know why, though it was very true. He faked shock.
The shock on Draco's face killed Hermione. She knew he would be upset, but not this much so....He would surely leave her now....But was she happy?
The truthful answer, was that she was relieved, but no, certainly not happy, not a bit. This confused her.
Draco shuffled his feet. He saw Hermione's eyes grow wide. He completely forgot about the Vanishing Cabinet behind him and turned around from Hermione. Her sob worsened, but he did not dare look around again, in case she might punch her again as she had done two years before, or maybe worse.
"Er-okay," he muttered awkwardly. "So...yeah. Fine. I mean," Draco spun around after taking a deep but silent breath and securing a very angry expression onto his face. Hermione stopped crying and looked very frightened. He figured he must have overdone it a bit, so he softened his face.
"It's not fine. So...if you didn't want....I mean, bye then, we can't....Yeah. So bye." Draco turned on his heel away from her.
