Chapter 4

I awoke abruptly. I was back in my basket, and I sensed the atmosphere of a building. I opened my eyes, blinked blearily, and looked around. I was in a dormitory, beside a trunk at the foot of a bed. The shiny polished floor was carpeted with a rich red rug, and I smelled fresh, clean sheets. I twitched my whiskers. It was a tranquil place, but I was stiff, and longed to get out of my small enclosure. My tail convulsed as I considered attempting an escape, but how was it possible?
Then I heard the noise of considerable conversation and footsteps, and the door opened. Girls crowded in, laughing and talking amiably. I was shy at first, but then I saw Hermione. I purred and meowed. She hurried over to me, and said sympathetically, "Oh, poor Crookshanks, in here all by himself and trapped in his basket!" She opened the basket and picked me up. I rubbed against her, but pinned my ears back as several strangers came over, and one carried another cat.
I had never been socialised among other feline, and wriggled to get away from the tabby tom that faced me. However, Hermione kept me in her arms and continued to pat me, talking with the girl, presumably her friend. I managed to leap out of her arms eventually, though, but unfortunately the other girl put down her cat and the tom padded eagerly up to me.
I pressed my body to the floor and hissed. Hermione looked around. I was instantly embarrassed and ashamed. Desperate to escape the gaze of my innocent owner I jumped onto one of the beds and up onto the book shelf. I was relieved to see Hermione laugh and turn back to her conversationalist. I sat upon a pile of books and pondered my situation, then wondered what this place was.
Crookshanks-On-Books
Yes, what was this place? Where had Hermione been when I had been stuck in my basket in this room, alone? Perhaps she would show me later. Yes, she probably would. In that case, I would not have to be troubled on the subject. In fact, I felt sleepy again, despite the fact that I had just been sleeping. The drowsiness returned, and I jumped down onto the bed. The softness welcomed me and tempted slumber - I lay down, and my eyelids drooped. Then I was lost in the phantasmagorical world of dreams.
