The Girl In The Forest

Chapter 3

I had smelt them, and knew they were there. As I turned around I discerned the scent as that of a human. I froze, but then continued my convulsive move to analyse who was behind me and observed the figure of a girl, presumably a teenager, her attentive eyes watching me without the usual apprehension but interest and empathy, and a wreath of roses in her hair. But, though she differed from the customary human in many ways, she was nonetheless a human.

I roared. Sparks flew at her, but she merely jumped with agility out of the way, brushing a loose strand of long hair from her face. I reared, and when I came back down my claws dug menacingly into the earth, tearing at the soil and breaking the tree roots below. I beat my wings and advanced, inhaled deeply, and expressed a fireball. Again the girl merely eluded it quickly and then continued watching me. Why isn't she running away? I thought curiously, but with frustration, and I blew more fire at her, with additional stamps and steps closer. I was coming closer, and I didn't want to be near to her. She wouldn't retreat, so with my advances I came close. I stopped, but growled, a deep rumble in my throat. Dragons have a distant comprehension of humans, and I could kind of understand the dialogue she spoke.
"Please don't be angry."
Angry? How could I not be angry with her presence so nearby? Enraged, I pounded my clawed foot upon the ground and gnashed my fangs. Smoke rose from my nostrils and the ridge of scales along my spine seemed more protruding than ever. Good, I thought, let me seem malicious so she will go away.
But then I realized something. I wanted the girl to go away, when I could very simply kill her. Why? I shook myself, bemused with my attitude. I made to issue flames again but stopped myself involuntarily. Maybe it's because she's young, I mused.
I watched her curiously. Then she extended her hand.
"You know me," she breathed.
I stared at her in puzzlement. Then there came a shout:
"Tracks! Tracks here! Dragon tracks!"
I jumped. The poachers. I had to go. I turned swiftly and spread my wings. The girl still watched me. "Be careful," she warned, then hurried off into the shadows of the trees. Perplexed I watched where she had vanished for a brief moment, then jumped up and ascended into the air. As I did so, a spell whizzed past me, and I discerned figures down below where I had been a second ago. Then I was flying, flying away, toward the sun.
