Hunting

Chapter 2

I knew it was reckless to call out but I did anyway. When I spoke, smoke puffed out on my breath and steam issued from my nostrils. "Wait!" My roar echoed across the landscape, and I heard yells. Human yells. As I cursed myself inwardly for my stupidity I saw wizards running below, flitting in and out of sight as the canopy of trees prevented their complete exposure to my vision. I hovered and ascended, beating my wings hard and desperately against the air, and clouds swam around me. Then a cloud carpet had formed at my clawed feet and I pressed on, relieved of the clouds'protection. Though still, I had to be careful, and drop my recklessness.
Now I had lost sight of the dragon ahead of me. I flew faster, and my previously leisure pace dropped. As I proceeded I jumped, startled, as a jet of red light shot up vertically in front of me. I paused, doubtful and anxious, but hastened on despite my reluctance. I could faintly hear the wizard poachers'yells far down below, but then they faded out and the peace and tranquility of the day returned.
Grateful for my luck I slowed, and exhaled deeply. I would never express any oral noise when poachers were around, for sure. But I could not take this mildly. Wizards could apparate, and catch up with me easily how ever far I went. Yet I did have an advantage, as they had no immediate directions on which to follow. They had no idea where I would go.
With this reassuring thought in mind I pressed on,until my wings tired and I had to land. I knew the way to energize myself was to eat something, but wasn't it too dangerous to hunt when there were poachers around? They can't be very near here, I thought as I considered. Then, daringly, I swooped lower and descended cautiously. The trees seemed to grow taller as I went down and then they were above me, and I was at their roots.

I sniffed the air. No human scents. Good. I folded my wings and proceeded to investigate the area. Any animal signs? I noticed an unnaturally bent piece of grass, and inhaled the sprig. A deer had passed through here - two deer! I licked my lips hungrily, and followed the trail the animals had left. They shouldn't be too far away, for the trail scent was not faint, but fresh.
And then I saw them. A stag and a doe, peering attentively at me, a large, menacing predator, in their eyes.

I didn't hesitate. Inhaling deeply, I summoned up all the fire I had stored and released it, with a large, exhaling breath. A large fireball I expressed, and it grazed the doe's flank. She screamed a shriek of pain and darted off. The stag had already departed, and he was no longer visible.
But the doe was. I launched upon her, and before long she was motionless and limp. Hungrily, I devoured the meal. Afterward, my hunger was satisfied, and I licked my lips, relishing the last taste on my tongue. Then I considered what to do next. Ascend into the sky to keep flying on my trip northward again, or stay here to rest?
Then I whirled around. For someone, or something, was behind me.
