Harestar's Orders

Chapter 2

Harestar sat, seemingly calmly, as he observed them quietly as they approached, yet his tail convulsed uneasily as he attempted as much serenity as he could muster. Hazelpelt's curiosity burned but she kept as casual as she could be, and inclined her head respectfully as she faced the leader of the clan. Ravenfur entered beside her, the longing to enquire visible in his gaze but he possessed a steady composure and formality, and bowed.

"Ravenfur, Hazelpelt," Harestar said, attempting congeniality but seriousness ruining it slightly. "I am sorry to so abruptly summon you, but you must understand it was for important reasons, but I do sincerely apologise for the inconvenience."
"No matter, sir," Ravenfur said quickly. Hazelpelt hastily and emphatically followed his example.
"I appreciate your empathy," Harestar said, "but I must hurry to the point. As I am sure you know, to the considerable annoyance of the clan, Thunderclan warriors have been trespassing on our territory lately, and it is continued to indignantly be wonder what they mean and intend by it. However, as you probably are aware of, I have not spoken to Bramblestar about it because I fear him mistaking it as an insult and going physically offensive." He paused, and looked down at his paws. "I have been irritatingly indecisive, I know," he said bitterly, "but I really can't help it. Yet I must give you your orders." He looked back up, and his eyes glittered with the choice to act. "I have decided that you will go, and, illegal as it is, spy on Thunderclan."
Hazelpelt stared. Ravenfur lifted his left front paw up in surprise and his ears pinned slightly backward as he digested the sudden information. Then slowly, due to his unwavering loyalty, he nodded and responded, "No matter how dangerous, of course, sir."
"I am sorry, very sorry," Harestar said apologetically, "but I am still struggling with the responsibilities of leadership and, though I am unsure whether this is the right decision, I will have to go with it. I would send more warriors to go, but that increases the probability of your being caught -" he stopped, then continued, "I know it is reckless, but it'll have to do."
"No, sir," Hazepelt spoke up, and stepped forward. "I think it is the best thing. If we could find out what Thunderclan means by their actions then maybe you wouldn't have to consult Bramblestar and trouble him."
Harestar greeted Hazelpelt's approval with relief. "Thank you," he said. "You will go tonight. Please be ready when the moon rises."
"Of course, sir," Ravenfur responded.
"For now rest in your dens, for it will be a long night," Harestar said. "Crowfeather will meet you at the Great Oak."
Hazelpelt and Ravenfur nodded in union. Then they padded out of Harestar's den, both immersed deeply in their thoughts.
