“I don’t want to leave, Mum!”, the girl shouted, hand flailing around, angrily. “Alexandra Kathryn Reese,” the mother started through gritted teeth. “I’ve got a wonderful job opportunity in America, it’ll be great.” The girl stopped flailing around, but pouted. “What about Iris? She’s gonna stay in London! And it’s not Alexandra. Just Alex.”, she asked/yelled. Her mother took a deep breath. “Going to, Alexandra. Don’t use that awful word. And it is Alexandra, I should know, I named you. Miami is a wonderful place, sun everyday, we’ve got a nice condo on the beach,” Alex(andra) groaned. “Miami has reception, you know. You’ll still be able to call Iris.” The mother said, her expression softening. She spread out her arms for a hug, and they did just so. “Mum,” the girl whispered, “This isn’t fair.” The mother nodded. “I know it isn’t, sweetie. We all have to make sacrifices if we want this to work, though. You know that.” Alexandra sighed. Her hands went up to her pearl necklace that her father had given her when she was five. Her mother noticed this, and said, “You’ll be able to see more of your father, too. He’s just in Florida.” She said, packing suitcases into the car. “You might even be able to stay with him over Summer.” She added as an afterthought. Alex sighed and hopped into the front seat of the car, and propped a pair of sunglasses on top of her head. She didn’t want to see her father. She just wanted to stay here, in London, with her school, and her teachers, and her friends.
