THE END OF THE BEGINNING - Book 3 - Malfoy Manor

Chapter 9
BANG! The explosion smashed the windows in the shops along the street, and glass shattered everywhere. The hooded figures were hurrying down the road, their masked faces revealing, despite the physical cover, triumphant and malicious leers. I dived to the side as a spell shot my way - the jet of red light hit a house nearby and a Muggle appeared in the doorway, shock and terror distinctive in their expression.
"Stupefy!" I yelled. I missed, and I had to jump out of the way again as a curse was aimed at me. There were three - no, four Death Eaters approaching, and the two of us were struggling. I heard a shout of "Expelliarmus!" And Caleb's wand flew out of his hand.
"Accio!" I shouted, and Caleb's wand spun into my grasp. I threw it and Caleb snatched it out of the air, but in his momentary distraction he lost concentration. The Body Bind hex hit him and he fell backward, but I hastily muttered the counter charm.
"Finite Incantatem!" I murmured desperately.
Caleb jumped up. He grinned at me. "Thanks."
It could have ended successfully. Caleb could have then turned and continued his defence, but that gratitude that he gave me was a mistake. The Stunning Spell hit him as he smiled appreciatively, and he fell, my gasp giving me an attack from the side. I stumbled like he had and entered a world of darkness.

I woke, sharply contemplating my surroundings with a groan of pain. My head throbbed, just like the rest of my body hurt. I heard a sound nearby and backed hastily away, ignoring the discomfort that my actions triggered. "Who's there?" I asked mistrustfully.
"Julia..."
"Caleb!" I scrambled to my feet and moved toward him. "I - I - where are we?"
"Where do you think?"
I hesitated. Yes, I knew it, by the cold, dank cellar that we were in and by the deadly stillness, save a slight murmur of conversation above. "Malfoy Manor," I whispered.
"Yes. Caught. Overpowered." Caleb's tone was bitter.
"We were outnumbered!" I reassured him, though I felt sick inside. "I - I -"
"Julia?"
I looked around. It was not Caleb who had spoken. I knew that voice. I tore forward, tears filling in my eyes as I ran into the arms of my father.
