When I saw the flash of green light inside the manor I knew what Caleb meant. He was gone. Gone forever. I sank to my knees and cried, cried until I felt the arms of my parents around me and knew that everything was all right. I barely listened as they told me what had happened - how Caleb had cast an Imperious Curse on Fenrir Greyback and made him attack the Death Eaters. But Caleb would never get to contemplate that victory. Bellatrix Lestrange had shot a Killing Curse at my mother and Caleb had jumped in front to protect her - he had known that he wouldn't come out alive.
As my father desperately summoned Ministry members I stood up and raised my wand, the golden light at its tip beaming. My tears were gone because I knew that he would always be with me. For this was only the beginning. The beginning of our friendship.
