PROLOGUE
Chapter 1
"Abby!" Emma swept into the bedroom, her long dress swishing. "I am going out for a walk. I personally request that you come with me."
"But of course." I answered, a little surprised but smiling all the same.
We were soon strolling arm in arm through the garden. It was chilly, as winter was coming on, but I did not mind - the air was refreshing and I felt up for adventure - a good feeling.
"Abby," Emma said suddenly, looking at me with that mischievous twinkle in her eyes that I knew so well, "You know my friend Harriet?"
I nodded. Harriet was a young lady similarly aged to ourselves, and Emma's good friend. They saw each other regularly. I knew that Harriet doted on Emma, and that my sister appreciated the attention.
Emma rubbed her gloved fingers together, a sign of excitement for her part. "And do you know our fine friend, Mr Elton?"
"My dear sister, of course I do! Why do you tease me in this way?"
Emma shook her head. "I am sorry, but I have just been thinking. You see, Mr Elton is not a married man, and," She lowered her voice to a whisper, "Harriet is not a married woman! Do you not think -"
I smiled, and held up my hand. "I think it is an ingenious plan. But Harriet has often talked of the farmer she knows. Mr Martin, you recall him?"
Emma bit her lip. "I know. But if we convince Harriet that Mr Martin is not good enough for her -"
I frowned. "Emma, surely that is slightly - well, far fetched? If she truly loves him -"
"He is a farmboy!" Emma protested, halting our progress in the garden by taking hold of my hand earnestly. "She could do better!"
I was about to speak but Emma put a finger to my lips. "Listen, Abby. I want this for the happiness of Harriet. And you can help me. With -" She looked around and checked no one was listening. "With your magic!"
