The Mansion

Chapter 1
Nora glanced into the bin that she had just saw someone throw something in. Then she saw the paper immediately. She snatched it up eagerly, and scanned it quickly. Yes, she was in the news. "Yes, a thief has certainly been around," Nora read. "We are searching for it. Last night someone's necklace went missing. And Mrs. Gertrude said she had put it in her little red box, and in the morning, it is suddenly gone. . ." Nora stopped reading, and looked at the necklace that was hanging around her neck. She had been the one who had stolen Mrs. Gertrude's special necklace. The girl grinned. Then she glanced around the street, and sneaked up it, and came upon her little shed. Yes, things were getting more homely. She had a patch quilt blankets, old chairs that were already in the the shed, and some plates that she had stolen from somebody else today. Nora jumped onto her patch quilt blanket, and lay on it for a while. Slowly she drifted into a doze. . .

Nora soon woke up, and she rubbed her eyes. It was already dark. Well, that was good for her! She got up, and crept outside. It was pitch dark, and everyone was asleep. The only lights was from the lamp posts. Nora decided to fetch her lantern from the shed, and then she went back outside again. She crept quietly around the town for while, when suddenly something made her stare, and gape. Right in front of her, towering really high, was the most biggest mansion. Nora was so excited. She climbed easily over the huge gate, and now she was in the garden. It was the hugest garden she had ever seen, and I can't explain it. Anyway, Nora, still gaping, set her lantern on the grass, kind of hidden in the bushes, so no one could see that a light was there. She looked up again at the mansion, and saw that each window was firmly shut. Well, the people who lived there were obviously of course worried that a burglar might come. Then Nora noticed at the top of the mansion, there must be an attic. A window was a crack open, and if Nora managed to climb up there, she could get into the mansion easily. But the climbing would not be easy, that is for sure. But Nora clenched her fist, and she eagerly started climbing. Each time she got higher, Nora got more anxious. But she thought happy thoughts like thinking what the most expensive things in the world would be in there. So Nora got a little bit of courage, and she climbed higher. When she had got halfway up, things got hard. There was not much to hold onto, and Nora thought if she climbed even higher, she might fall. The the thief looked down, and she just managed not to scream. She was about 33 feet high, and she had to climb more! Nora took a deep breath and she didn't know how she did it, but she reached to the window of the attic that was a little bit open. She pulled it out more, and clambered into the mansion, and finally she was on firm ground. Nora closed her eyes, and stood there for quite a long time. But she knew she couldn't just stay there, so she opened her eyes, and opened the attic door.
