Horcruxes are supposed to be dark magic. But there are also things that make it light. Horcruxes are a way of splitting your soul. So, as Slughorn says, you will not die as long as you have made horcruxes. True, murdering to make a horcrux is not light, good, or positive in no ways. But, what is wrong with staying alive?? They just keep you safe from death.
