Against All Odds

written by Kahala Naga

According to Kahala Naga, Darius Loire is an annoying, thinks-he's-better-than-everyone-else Slytherin jerk. She's a pureblood, too, and it's no surprise when she gets sorted into Slytherin. She's in the same house as her mortal enemy, Darius. They always fight, constantly feuding about magic and rank in the wizarding society. But...they seem to have a connection beyond just being at the same school and in the same house. It lies beyond lifetimes.

Rain

Chapter 1
Drip, drip, drip.
It was raining outside; Kahala sat on her four- poster bed, elbows on the windowsill, and watched the little silver raindrops cascade down from the sky. She was oblivious to everything else- the crackling of the fire in the Slytherin common room, the conversations of her roommates, Leetah, and Kai, and her Gryffindor best friend, Celestia, as the water continued to pour. It was only rain- anyone else would just walk by, or try to cover their heads as they raced across the courtyard in desperate want for shelter from the storm. But Kahala was different than the rest. She could stare for hours on end as rivers rushed past as they traveled though the woods; as the waves of oceans and lakes lapped at the shore; and at rain as it spattered on her window.
Some would say that she had a connection to water; it was true, from what she had discovered about herself. A secret of many that no one knew, except for her enemy. Darius Loire.
He was a pureblood Slytherin, as well. He acted like anyone who wasn't at his "rank" in wizarding society were as good as muggles. Like they were filthy and needed to know their place. But he knew her secret; and she knew his. They were different from everyone else. They were more talented; more powerful; than everybody else. Everyone, except for each other.

"Kahala!" she was broken from her trance- like state as a voice called out to her. She turned her head.
"Yes, Celestia?" she replied, swinging her legs to face her friends. She folded her hands in her lap, in a mock imitation of someone prepared to listen.
"You want to join the conversation? We're talking about Quiddich. Thought you might want to join in."
Kahala stood up and walked over to where they were all sitting. She sat down on Leetah's four-poster bed, putting her hand on one of the wooden beams.
"The seeker is the best." She said immediately, her eyes showing her ever popular "It's true so don't even try to argue" sapphire blue gleam. She shrugged her shoulders knowingly, smiling. Being the seeker was the best position, after all. OK, maybe it was because she was the Slytherin seeker. One of them, anyway...
The rules had changed two years ago, when both she and Darius Loire had tried out for that position. It had been their second year, and they were finally qualified to be on the team. But...they were both good. Great. Amazing. It was impossible to choose between them, even for Headmistress Trillany. So, for the first time, a Hogwarts team had two seekers. Kahala and Darius alternated every game- they would play, then sit on the sidelines. Play, sit on the sidelines. It was like that every game Slytherin played, and every game Slytherin won. It was the first time that two seekers had been on a house team, and also the first time that Slytherin had won every single game in the entire year. Finally, Gryffindor had been knocked off their winning streak.
"Take that, Summer Dawnfoot." Kahala mumbled under her breath. She smiled to herself. She was now the reigning queen of Quiddich. And no one would take that from her.
