Defense Against The Dark Arts 101 - Lesson 1

Chapter 1
THE DARK ARTS: THE THREE SPELL CATEGORIES

1: THE JINX

-Does not usually cause much harm
-Mild irritation
-Does not cause lasting damage
EXAMPLES:
-The Tripping Jinx
-The Stinging Jinx
-The Knockback Jinx

2: THE HEX

-Bit darker than a jinx
-Can do more lasting harm than a jinx
-Viewed as major inconveniences
-Causes moderate harm
-Can be undone by a Hex Breaker
EXAMPLES:
-The Bat-Bogey Hex
-The Hurling Hex
-Densaugeo

3: THE CURSE

-Darkest and most dangerous
-Can seriously harm or kill
EXAMPLES:
-The Reductor Curse
-The Full Body-Bind Curse
-The Conjunctivitis Curse

-The Unforgivable Curses fall inside the 'The Curse' (Explained in 2nd year)


WAND LIGHTING AND WAND EXTINGUISHING CHARMS

1: WAND LIGHTING CHARM

-When performed properly lights up the tip of the casters wand
-Not a flame
-Like a muggle flashlight
-The light produced is a light yellow when cast correctly
-Little concentration or willpower
-Great for navigation in dark places
-Keeps Dark Creatures away that have an aversion to light
-Incantation is Lumos (LOO-mos)
-Wand movement is a counter-clockwise loop

2: WAND EXTINGUISHING CHARM
-Incantation is Nox (NOCK-ss)
-Wand movement is a flick or jab in any direction
