LESSON 1: Introduction to Charms
Charms Journal (optional)

Introduction
-Think of Charms as an introduction to spellcasting
-This year we will cover the basics of spellcasting
*Including the importance of pronunciation and wand movements
-We will touch on the basics of Wandlore
*Ex: why we need a wand, what wands are typically made of, and why it is important to properly care for them
Brief History and Essential Laws
-In ancient history, magic was practiced openly and freely
*In Greece and Egypt, witches and wizards
-The Ollivander family has been making wands since 382 B.C.E.
-Around 1000 C.E., the Wizarding World started to separate from the Muggle World.
-1000 C.E. to 1400 C.E., the Wizarding World was ruled by the Council of Warlocks
-In the 1400s, different countries started to create their own magical governments
*This is now why there are separate Ministry of Magics in most countries
-In the 1600s, witches and wizards were persecuted
*Witches used flame-freezing charms to stop the fire from burning them
-International Statute of Secrecy Law was passed in 1689
*This law completed the separation between the Wizarding World and the Muggle World
-Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery
*Passed in 1875 to prevent any students under the age of 17 from practicing mag outside of school
*Exceptions to this law include your life of the life of a fellow human being at stake
The Discovery of Wands
-Before wands, hippogriff wing feathers were wrapped around a stick and people attempted to use this as a way to control their magic
*People also used metal rods
-Eventually, the modern wand was created
*The modern wand is a wooden shaft containing a core from a powerful magical creature
The Wand-Lighting and Wand-Extinguishing Charms
-First known use of the wand-lighting charm was in the 18th century
-Historians credit Levina Monkstanley, a Ministry of Magic employee
*First demonstrated in 1772
-Can be used to provide light, for entertainment, and to repel creatures
-A very low concentration is required to light the tip of your wand
-The tip of your wand should be a light yellow
