Class Rules:
1. No food or drink in the classroom. If something were to be spilled while we are doing practical lessons someone could fall and get hurt
2. Be respectful
3. No cheating. It will not be tolerated. You will receive a 1% and a detention

The Dark Arts: An Introduction
-The "Dark Arts" is a general term that covers anything that has the intent to harm, injure, or kill another person
-Once the Dark Arts have a hold on you, it will never let go
-From 1995-1998, Voldemort worked to attain power after regaining his human form
*He lost his human form when he attacked the Potters in 1981, killing Lily and James, but only leaving Harry with a scar
-During the school year of 1997-1998, the class Dark Arts was taught rather than Defense Against the Dark Arts
*This was because Voldemort had succeeded in taking over the Ministry of Magic in 1997
-The Dark Arts can never be defeated or completely known
The Dark Arts: The Three Spell Categories
Jinx
-The lowest level of Dark spell
-Will not cause much harm, considered a minor irritation
-Common example: Knockback Jinx
Hex
-The second classification of Dark spells
-More lasting damage than a jinx
-Common example: Bat-Bogey Hex
Curse
-The final classification of Dark spells
-Used with the intent of serious harm or death to the victim
-Common Example: Full Body-Bind Curse
The Unforgivable Curses (a category of curses within the category of curses)
-Imperius Curse
*puts you in control of that person's mind, allows you to control what they do
-Cruciatus Curse
*causes an immense amount of pain, the cruelest form of torture
-Avada Kedavra Curse
*the killing curse, death is caused in an instant
The Wand-Lighting and Wand-Extinguishing Charms
Spell: The Wand-Lighting Charm
Incantation: Lumos (pronounced: loo-mos)
Wand Movement: A counter-clockwise loop
Concentration: Low- lighting up the tip of your wand
Willpower: Low
Spell: The Wand-Extinguishing Charm
Incantation: Nox (pronounced: nocks)
Wand Movement: A flick of the wand
Concentration: None
