Chapter 2 - How To Be A Member

Chapter 2

To become a member of S.P.E.W. you must of course believe in protecting the helpless. Being a S.P.E.W. member can be a thankless job sometimes with little gratitude even from the beings we help. House elves have been so brainwashed that most all believe that they love being slaves. It takes a special kind of person to fight for the equality of others when even the people you are trying to help are against you. The reason to continue the fight for them is simple. We, as decent wizards and witches can not stand idly by while others are being treated so cruelly. Not that every master is a bad one. However the precedent that it sets isn't good. It is saying that house elves are less than us. It says possibly that every other creature be they merpeople, house elves, centaurs, or even muggles are less than us, that we are better than them.

Where does it stop, this wizarding supremacy? Do we continue on this path of outright slavery? As we saw in 1998 that kind of thinking led the Ministry of Magic to start denying even basic rights to witches and wizards based on the fact that their parents were not considered "one of us" aka muggle born. What members of S.P.E.W. realize and what we want others to realize is that we all have our strengths and weaknesses. One race of being is not better or worse than any other. As I mentioned in the previous chapter wizards and witches have started to realize that it is beneficial to both races (wizarding and house elves alike) to treat house elves with kindness and respect. To do so to every race of being could open up our world in new and unexpected ways.

To join formally there is no fee (except that of which you spend to buy your pin to show your support!), and there are quite a few groups online to join. Find one with that fits you the best and show your support to start treating house elves (as well as all other beings) as equals!
