Chapter 1 - The History Of S.P.E.W.
Chapter 1
S.P.E.W. or as it is less commonly known as the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare was founded in 1994 by Hermione Granger. It was originally going to be called Stop the Outrageous Abuse of Our Fellow Magical Creatures and Campaign for a Change in Their Legal Status or S.O.A.O.F.M.C.C.C.T.L.S. As even just the initials were too long to fit on pins the name was changed to the more catchy, shorter S.P.E.W. Its first (albeit reluctant) members were Ron Weasley, Harry Potter, and Neville Longbottom. Dobby the Free House Elf was the first and currently only known elf member to date.
While the original founding of S.P.E.W. was met with much criticism and little support it has flourished under the popularity of its' founder and original members. Despite it's number of current members, the two sickle donation to join was next to impossible for S.P.E.W.'s founder Hermione to get at it's start. Most people didn't want to think about the house elves, especially since the house elves had been brought up to think that being free was shameful and getting treated properly or not was a luxury. To most people house elves seemed happy, so their welfare was often overlooked.
Hermione became outraged to learn about Winky the elf and how Mr. Crouch (a ministry of magic official no less) was treating her. She vowed to help all house elves and continued to meet their resistance as well as the people who liked "owning" house elves.
Some however attribute the actions of the Hogwart house elves in the 1998 Battle of Hogwarts to S.P.E.W. Some believe that between Hermione's treatment to house elves and Dobby and Kreacher example to think for themselves led to their participation in battle. Unconfirmed sources even attribute the downfall of
He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named, in part, to information given by a house elf Kreacher.
