Chapter 2
We were going to go to Diagon Alley now! And we were going to use Floo Powder! I had always wanted to travel by Floo Powder.
"Mum! Come on!" I said impatiently.
"I'm coming," said mum's voice, and she appeared in the lounge area.
"Now where' Fe -" I started, but Felix suddenly appeared next to me as though he had Apparated.
"Okay, I'll go first," I said, nervous and excited.
"You do know what to do, don't you?" mum asked.
"Of course I do! I've seen dad do it heaps of times! Don't worry!" I said reassuringly.
"Okay then," mum said.
I put my hand into a bag near the fireplace, and drew out a handful of Floo Powder. Stepping into the fireplace, I said loudly and clearly, "Diagon Alley!" I dropped the Floo Powder, and suddenly I disappeared in a flame of green.
It was the most weird feeling. I was whirling around in the chimney, and suddenly I landed on something hard. I was lying flat on my stomach. I stood up, and looked around. Hanging from the roof, there was a sign saying Flourish and Blotts. And it seemed like the walls were covered with books. The colour of the covers of the books were beautiful red, golden, brown, blue. I touched them gently. But then I looked back at the fireplace, panic swirling inside me. What if I had messed up, and travelled to another place, and mum and Felix would not which place I had ended up in?
I was getting so worried, but suddenly the fire showed green sparks again, and Felix appeared.
"Felix!" I was so happy to see him, I went forward to hug him, but stopped myself in time.
"So we did get to the right place?" Felix asked.
"I think so," I said. Then I heard the noise of flames in the fireplace, and mum appeared, perfectly upright on her feet.
"Mum!" I said. "Before you guys came, I was afraid that I had ended up in the wrong place."
"Well, you didn't, did you," said mum, smiling at me.
"This shop in Diagon Alley is so cool!" I said.
"Yes," said mum.
I then saw a book on one of the shelves. It was called the monster book of monsters. The cover was soft, like fur. I took it gently down from the shelf, and gave a gasp of surprise. Where the writing was, in the middle, if you looked at it sideways, you could clearly see three little eyes. And the book was strapped tight with little fanged teeth!
"Anna, don't unstrap it, if you were going to!" said a voice behind me. It was mum.
"Why?"
"Because they start biting first thing with those little teeth."
"Oh, right." I laughed aloud at the thought of the book snapping at Felix while he ran away, the book chasing after him.
"Yes, Felix, you both need that one, for Transfiguration" said mum, and I glanced over at Felix who was holding a book called A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration, by Emeric Switch.
I put back Monster Book of Monsters back, and got the Transfiguration Book.
The list said from Professor McGonagall, that we had to get The Standard Book Of Spells, Grade one, and History Of Magic, Magical Theory, One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi, Magical Drafts and Potions, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, (but which I already had,) A Dark Forces: A Guide to Self Protection - what a lot! I put all the books into my bag, and mum said we should go and get my wand now! YES!! I just couldn't wait. We reached the sign saying - Ollivander's. I ran to the entrance, Felix behind me, and I opened the door to the wand shop. There stood a man at a desk, frowning slightly at a wand he was holding. I exchanged nervous looks with Felix. Then suddenly Felix said, boldly, "Er, Hello."
Ollivander looked up slowly and smiled. "Ah," he said quietly.
"Er, we're obviously here for our wand," continued Felix.
"You, you come here," said Ollivander suddenly, pointing at Felix.
"Um, okay," said Felix nervously, and walked up to the desk where Ollivander was standing.
I watched them both closely. Just then mum walked into the shop.
Ollivander didn't look up, but continued staring into Felix's face. Then he turned away, and got a thin box from one of the shelves. He took out the wand and said to Felix, "This wand is a Hawthorn wand with Dragon Heartstring Core, nine inches."
Felix took the wand from the box, waved it and suddenly glass shattered from one of the windows. Ollivander took the wand from Felix's hand and put it back in the box, and then put another thin box down on the desk. "This time, Holly wood with phoenix core, eight inches" he said.
Felix took the wand inside it, and waved it. Red sparks came out of the wand, and immediately Ollivander said, "Very good, very good."
"You've got your wand, Felix!" said mum quietly. I looked at Felix, who was looking extremely pleased with himself.
Ollivander beckoned to me. I slowly walked over to him, and waited while he took down another thin box. "Beech wood with a unicorn hair."
I waved it, and immediately, I felt hot in my fingers, and red sparks came out of the wand just like Felix's had.
"Immediately," I heard Ollivander say, and then he said more loudly, "Very good," just as he had said to Felix.
My wand was a pretty one. I smiled at Ollivander, and went back to mum to show her my wand.
We went to a few other shops and me and Felix got cauldron, and dress robes and a pointed hat, a pair of protective gloves. All we had to get now was our pets. We walked tiredly to Eeylops Owl Emporium. The bell jingled noisily above the door. I spotted an owl at once, which had nice pretty brown feathers. I also spotted a barn owl, which was really beautiful. I looked at Felix, who was looking at a rat. He really liked rats, and had wanted one for ages. I walked around the shop, and saw three toads next to each other, one of them croaking loudly. I laughed. I also saw a tabby cat, and patted it's sleek fur. I then saw another owl. I needed to get that owl. It had beautiful brown feathers, dark on the back, and light brown and dark between the feathers on the front of the owl. It had a yellow beak, and round black eyes.
"Mum! I need to get this owl!" I said, and showed mum the beautiful bird.
"That is very beautiful!" mum agreed. "And Felix, what do you want to get?"
"This rat, the black one!" replied Felix, pointing at the visible rat.
"Well, okay, but are you sure you don't want to get a cat, or something else?" mum asked.
"No!" said Felix firmly. "Just a rat."
We went to the counter, and paid for the pets. I also spotted another cat, that was a very furry ginger one. It looked very grumpy. I laughed at the cat.
We all trooped out of the shop, Felix holding his rat daintily, and my owl in the cage I was holding.
We had finally done all our shopping in Diagon Alley! Finally!
