Chapter 7

Professor Jesse LeStrange, jesselestrangemh@gmail.com

We will be studying the solar system!

Astronomy is “a natural science that is the study of celestial objects (such as
moons, planets, stars, nebulae, and galaxies), the physics, chemistry,
and evolution of such objects, and phenomena that originate outside the
atmosphere of Earth, including supernovae explosions, gamma ray bursts,
and cosmic background radiation. A related but distinct subject,
cosmology, is concerned with studying the universe as a whole.”

A power point presentation can be found here.

Planets rotate around the sun in orbit.

There is an inner solar system and outer solar system. They are separated by the asteroid belt between Jupiter and Mars. There are 7,000 asteroids in this belt, the largest being Ceres. Ceres has 25% of the mass of all the other asteroids combined.
